Digital fiction is the new literacy

I always tried to navigate my part, where did I fit as a reader and a writer? I never thought I could be both until I decided to dive into the heart of interactive fiction. Blurring the lines of my favourite books, what would it feel like to be the protagonist of my own story? What if my Romeo never died? Well, I wanted him alive for the sake of “keeping my darling” and rewriting his destiny!

Navigating a journey alongside the audience and getting them exactly where they want to go dates back to 1975 when interactive fiction gained prominent recognition through Adventure, a storybook game. Soaring to an unchartered ambit, the introduction of MUDs (multi-user dungeons) brought together a virtual world of players and developers.

With the emergence of interaction in the gaming world, it has become vital to explore unique bonds with audiences, something to, perhaps, make them feel more consequential even in the reading world.

With the addition of innovative and developing technologies, wanting to integrate multimedia with storytelling, offering a compelling space for community building.

Readers are not new to the concept of Gamebooks,  www.fightingfantasy.com collaborates games with fantasies alongside providing the audience with a roleplaying experience that has existed since the 1980s. Being aware of the traditional storytelling ways, interactive fiction offers the opportunity to divulge different perspectives, collaborating with other talents based on multiple alternate endings.

Remember looking at the illustrations in a book and grabbing the one with the most colourful pictures?

That is how I got into reading; the visuals fostered new ideas, and the next thing I knew, I searched for Hogwarts. The closest to starting an adventure was looking at the pictures and movie remakes. With the unlimited growth of social media, there are limitless ways to challenge traditionalistic ways of storytelling. Kindle, an e-reading device that avoids the expense of purchasing and providing easy accessibility, was first released in 2007. The readers had all the books in their hand through a single device.

Wattpad, platform released in 2006, for writers of all ages to create their own stories with whatever genre is unchartered water for the entire Gen-Z, where they could develop their fiction with their idealised character as the protagonist. It also had a comment section that acted as a haven for readers and writers, which was revolutionary for the world of narration.

Building on this digital advancement, seeking feedback through comments would empower readers and writers to open endless possibilities for story development. Imagine my delight in getting a bonus chapter for my favourite fanfic years later.

Did you ever find your idol fanfic in wattpadd?

With existing sources of interactive fiction games, I wonder where established authors and publishers fit in.

With expertise in literature content, authors can use interactive fiction as a platform for storytelling and to attract a wider audience by collaborating with direct audience and emerging artists from different fields. Alongside publishers to ensure the exclusivity and copyrights of their work. This also gives the publishers to participate and choose the books they might find rewarding.

It’s hard to forget COVID-19, stuck in a house with millions of shows to rewatch and books to reread, I often found it challenging to get hold of new plots and ideas. I remember reading a Facebook post from a guy kilometres away in America, making up the most remarkable story of an Ice dragon he saw in his dreams. Oh how  I could have nurtured it into my story! Interaction with diverse people allows the authors to iterate with their audience, learning and developing elements that would have been impossible to explore through traditional ways of writing.

An immersive world designed for real-life experience and decision-making, expanding the reader involvement could be achieved through Interactive fiction. Keeping them engaged means making them the protagonists of the story; the plot is mine, and the decision is yours. Not only would it increase the consumption of literacy, but it would also add to reading as a form of therapy. Readers make the decision; writers alter the story.

An interactive experience with novels and writing would not only help collaborate with people who have different art skills but would also allow bond and connect with the characters to a deeper level. Offering the publishers a to tailor the market for unique storytelling experience and shortlisting content based on ongoing trends keeping up to date.

Interactive stories can be considered an unexplored genre in the writing world; with easy accessibility came ever-evolving success; a book published in 2005 can gain recognition in 2024, courtesy of social media. Through interactive platforms, advertising content has been made relatively more straightforward. Digital media has provided a ground-breaking shift literature, making it ever more inclusive and diversifying the ways of storytelling.

With no limit to imagination, embarks this journey of narrations through digital media bringing together authors, gamers, publisher and readers.
